Tosfos mentions that today we collect Kesuba even from cash, because of Takana's HaG'eonim.
Just a point, what power did the G'eonim have - how does that fit with the sealing of the Talmud?
Rav Elchanan famously (and controversially) held that if all of klal yisroel get together they have power to make new things, is this a proof to him? (i am writing this from memory, so don't hole me to the details of RavElchanan opinion)

why is this any worse than that takanos of rabbeinu gershom. i would think that in money matters it is easier since every marriage post the takana would be ada'ata d'hachi and would automatically be based on the clause that he is mesha'abed even his metaltilin to the kesuba.
באמת, צדקו דברי הכותב שאמר שיש כח להגאונים לבטל דברי חכמים, שהרי מתקנת חכמים שאין גובין כתובה ממטלטלי, ובאו הגאונים וביטלו אותו. ואולי עשו כן משום תקנת השעה שראו שלא היה לבני אדם קרקע ורצו שיהיה אפשרות שהאשה תגבה כתובתה. ורק שר' אלחנן אמר כן לענין אם אמורא יכול לחלוק על התנא, ואמר בשם הגר"ח שלעולם יש כח ביד אמורא לחלוק על התנא, אלא שלא נהגו כן. וכן י"ל לענין תקנת הגאונים.
